2018 – 2019 OSSM Peer Mentor Applications

If your Knight is interested in an interactive leadership opportunity, they should consider applying to be a Peer Mentor for the Out of State Student Mentoring (OSSM) Program! OSSM Peer Mentors serve as peer advisors, resources, and role models for first year students and are representatives of the First Year Experience Office and the University of Central Florida. Through training, OSSM Peer Mentors will be responsible for a specific body of knowledge about the University and must be sincerely interested and skillful in sharing this knowledge with first year students. Please review the minimum requirements below, we would love to have your knight on our team!

Minimum Requirements

  • Exhibit leadership potential and a strong commitment to the mission of the First Year Experience Office.
  • Have a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.75 at the time of application- 3.0 preferred. GPA will be verified.
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time UCF student (no less than 12 undergraduate credit hours in spring 2018), with continued full-time enrollment through spring 2019.
  • Must commit to Fall 2018 mentoring responsibilities (see specific requirements below); Summer 2018 mentoring is optional.
  • Possess a strong interest and desire to help out-of-state, first year students make a positive transition to UCF.
  • Agree to abide by professional and ethical standards of conduct, including following all UCF regulations and civil laws, from the point of selection through the end of employment.
  • Record must be free of violations within the Department of Housing and Residence Life and the Office of Student Conduct, including a clear status in regards to disciplinary probation. Conduct record will be verified.
  • At the time of application, be approved to work within the United States by the U.S. Government, including having within your possession a Social Security number and card.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The satisfaction of helping first year, out-of-state students succeed at UCF!
  • $8.10 per hour paid throughout the Summer and Fall semester based on hours fulfilled (does not include tax deductions).
  • Great letters of recommendations and involvement piece for your resume
  • CRLA certification (College Reading & Learning Association), pending GPA.

Knight-Thon

The OSSM Knight-Thon team is still recruiting new members and we would love for your Knight to join us! This semester, students will participate fundraising events to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in the Greater Orlando area. On April 7, we will wrap up our fundraising efforts with a 24 hour dance-a-thon! This includes games, performances, and interacting with families that are benefiting from their fundraising efforts.

Last year, UCF students raised $1,250,961 for Knight-Thon and we’re looking forward to helping them support more families this year! So far, the OSSM Knight-Thon team has raised $1,758.19 for children battling cancer and we hope to raise $6,300 by April 7!

Here’s how to join the OSSM Knight-Thon Team or make a donation!

  • Go to this website
  • Click “Join our Team” the registration fee is $10.
  • Fill your registration information and pay the $10 fee.
    • The $10 fee goes to the OSSM donor drive and is counted towards the teams fundraising efforts.
