At the conclusion of each fall and spring semester, students prepare to finalize their final grade with the completion of final exams. Often, a final exam is the last remaining grade in a student’s gradebook, and they are weighted to a higher velocity; this prompts students to achieve superior performance in the effort to maintain or boost their overall grade.

In the effort to support students during this potentially stressful time, the Student Academic Resource Center (SARC) spearheads a program through a coalition between the Student Government Association (SGA), the Office of Student Involvement (OSI), and the Student Union, and financially supported by the Parent & Family Fund Grant, called “Study Union.”

Within the bounds of the fellowship, Study Union aims to facilitate a productive and educational space where students can prepare for their final exams. For the Fall 2019 semester, the Student Union will hold between 70 – 90 sessions on December 3 – 7, which will cover courses within the fields of Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, and Physics.

Each session will be anchored by SARC Tutors and Supplementary Instruction (SI) Leaders, who will hone on lecturing, quizzing, and answering questions during a 2-hour period. Students are welcome to come and go as they please. Reviews for each session will be posted prior, so that students can prepare before they attend, supplement instruction while in attendance, and cement what they have taken away post attendance. All sessions will additionally be live-streamed on Panopto, to ensure that students can receive the instruction, even if they are unable to be at the session physically.

“Study Union is an opportunity for students to review for their exams with their fellow classmates under the leadership of a highly academic SARC tutor or SI Leader,” said SARC Coordinator Patricia Harley. “We set up Study Union to be put on by students, as the strongest tutoring can often times be that peer to peer engagement, as they can share mutual triumphs and struggles.”

To supplement instructions occurring in the study sessions and the potential anxieties of the students, Study Union livens the sessions by hosting a variety of activities, providing giveaways, and giving out promotional items, such as t-shirts. The Parent and Family Fund Grant helps to furnish the production of Study Union, as the activities, giveaways, promotional items, room rentals, and technology are crafted into reality with the allotted funds.
