Checking In (February Resources)

Wow! How is it already February?! Always seems like the beginning of the year flies by. But that doesn’t mean there’s not time for you and your student to check in on your goals!

What goals did your student set for the Spring semester and how are they going? Did you set goals as well that you want to revisit or recommit to?

February’s Pegasus Parent Post featured article is all about checking in on goals and reinforcing supportive resources and university timelines so you and your student can be successful this month and beyond.

Enjoy!

  • Evaluate if your goal is too vague: Instead of “going to the gym”, think about setting a more specific with statements like, “run a mile 3 days a week.”
  • Avoid setting a loooooong-term goal: Long-term goals tend to fizzle out because we can stick on the larger view rather than what we need to do now. If you are struggling with your goal, try to set short-term, manageable goals.
  • Measure your achievement regularly: It is a good habit to set a short-term goal to achieve a long-term goal (see above). Weekly or monthly measurements can help you to check what achievements you’ve met.
  • Write down goals in a positive statement: Instead of “don’t fail my biology class,” consider rewording goal statements as “get a grade of C or above” so that you are encouraged and impacted by positive ambitions.
  • Don’t be discouraged: Some people get discouraged easily when they feel they are not achieving their goal. It is okay to modify initial goals or miss a few days off your routine (like starting to workout in February instead of January 1!). Don’t fall into the trap of being a perfectionist when you are working towards your goals.

Your student might encounter some struggles this spring semester whether they newer to UCF or well into their degree program and getting ready to look towards graduation. In fact, upper-level courses are often designed to be taken in the Spring. Sometimes, students feel burdens during Spring because environments or structures to what they got used to during Fall semester have changed. If your student seems not confident with their academics, try to ask these questions and guide them with helpful resources UCF offers.

  • Do you need help from an academic advisor to begin planning ahead or manage your current schedule?

It's time to plan ahead for next year already!

Starting on Monday, March 6, Summer and Fall 2023 course registration enrollment date and times per student will be announced on students’ myUCF portal. Each student will be assigned an official time and date that course registration for these semesters will open for them.

Then, on Thursday, March 23, class registration for these upcoming terms will begin/open.

Before academic advisors’ offices gets too crowded around March 23 and onwards, encourage your student to begin scheduling an appointment with their advisor to start the conversation on their upcoming course registration plan.

Spring Break 2023 is from Monday, March 13 to Sunday, March 19!

Spring Break gives enough time for students to visit home, relax from hard academic work, or even experience facilitated programs like Alternative Spring Break or study abroad opportunities. If you and your students haven’t already, try to plan ahead on these things!

Even reminding your student about Spring Break might relieve their “middle of the semester” tension!
