Turning An Ending Into A New Beginning (May Resources)

May marks the end of your student’s year at UCF and is a great time for self-reflection.

Did your student accomplish their personal and academic goals? Did they create community with peers and classmates? Did they get involved in activities or attend events? Did they properly estimate the costs associated with continuing their education at UCF? Talk about these things together.

If your student did well over these past 10 months, they should be congratulated for a job well done. Be supportive and communicate your expectations of them being home for the summer. There might have been things that changed for you and your family over the year that you will need to navigate with your student now that they are home for an extended period of time. Be prepared for changes in your relationship that may signal their growing maturity and remind yourself that they’re trying to make their own way in the world.

Some things to accomplish together in the coming weeks:

RESOURCE: UCF's Centsible Knights program (run by the Office of Student Financial Assistance) has resources for students to explore healthy spending habits, investment advice, and saving for the future.

RESOURCES: Housing and Residence Life have a helpful page that gives an overview of the process to solidify housing on-campus. In addition, the Office of Neighborhood Relations has information on things to consider when thinking about off-campus housing arrangements.

RESOURCE: Goals helps us know when we are successful. The Student Academic Resource Center has a great document that outlines how to effectively set realistic goals and also where motivation comes from. Encourage your student to check it out!

RESOURCE: UCF's Student Academic Resource Center has a great website all about time management, with videos and documents to help your student master this essential skill.
